Help kids learn about the plant of the month with the Gallavants

Plant of the Month

This is our Plant of the Month section, where we introduce you to a new plant each month. Every plant has its own amazing story to tell! From tall, fuzzy plants that grow near water to beautiful flowers that attract buzzing bees, there is always something new and exciting to learn about.

Some plants can be used to make baskets and mats from their leaves, while others have roots that are tasty and nutritious to eat! You’ll find out about plants that provide fluff for birds’ nests and even plants with amazing ways to spread their seeds far and wide. Each month, you’ll get to know a different plant and some of its awesome properties.

Nature Art for kids with the Gallavants

Nature Art

The greatest artist of all is, of course, Mother Nature.
The beauty, variety, and abundance of designs, colors, and forms in nature make us all feel a sense of awe and wonder. WOW!
Making art using what we find in the woods, park, or perhaps our own garden can be like making an offering to this awesome designer of our natural world.
“Nature Art” is a good word for it! It is really a lot of fun!
Go outside and collect all kinds of leaves, seedpods, pebbles, and whatever you can find as materials. The different seasons, of course, offer totally different stuff you can use to make Nature Art.
The main things you need are Inspiration, Imagination, and Creativity – yours!

Teach kids about what is a plant - Gallavants

What is a Plant?

Let’s Leaf into it! 🌱

Plants are kind of a big deal. Without them, Earth would be one hungry, airless, lifeless party. They feed animals, bugs, birds—even us! Oh, and they make the oxygen we breathe. Not bad for something that just stands around in the dirt.

There are two types:

🌸 Flowering plants (like roses!)
🌿 Non-flowering ones (like moss—tiny but mighty!) Some are teeny-tiny, and some, like the sequoia tree, are taller than your house…and your school…and maybe your whole town.

Most plants make their own food with sunlight using something called photosynthesis (fancy word alert!). Their leaves are full of green stuff called chlorophyll—basically solar panels for plants. Add sunshine, water, and soil nutrients, and BOOM! They grow, snack, and even burp out oxygen for us. Forests = planet lungs. Pretty cool, right?

It’s like we’re all together part of ONE HUGE organism! Therefore, we need to make sure we get to know as many of the other parts of this whole thing as we can. Learn about our environment and all the diversity and magic we can find in nature. That way we come become aware of how connected we all are. To love something, one needs to get to know it.

Learn about Nature's Elements with the Gallavants

Nature’s Elements

Let’s explore the four basic elements on our planet:
Water, Fire, Earth, and Air.

Water covers most of Earth’s surface and is vital for all living beings. Oceans, lakes, and rivers are teeming with life, and all creatures, including humans, need water to survive.

Fire is powerful and transformative. Magma from volcanoes and lightning are natural displays of fire’s energy. Fire provides warmth and energy but can also be dangerous, like in forest fires. It’s crucial to handle fire with care.

Earth is the solid foundation for life. Plants grow in its fertile soil, and many creatures make it their home. Earthworms and other small beings enrich the soil, making it healthy and productive.

Air is a mix of nitrogen and oxygen, essential for breathing. Oxygen is produced by plants in oceans and forests through photosynthesis. Without air, life wouldn’t be possible.
