This is our Plant of the Month section, where we introduce you to a new plant each month. Every plant has its own amazing story to tell! From tall, fuzzy plants that grow near water to beautiful flowers that attract buzzing bees, there is always something new and exciting to learn about.

Some plants can be used to make baskets and mats from their leaves, while others have roots that are tasty and nutritious to eat! You’ll find out about plants that provide fluff for birds’ nests and even plants with amazing ways to spread their seeds far and wide. Each month, you’ll get to know a different plant and some of its awesome properties.

May – Dandelions

Here are some fun facts about dandelions:

 

  • Flying Seeds: Dandelions have seeds with little parachutes! When you blow on them, they float away in the wind to find new places to grow.
  • Sun Seekers: Dandelion flowers open in the morning to greet the sun and close at night, almost like they’re going to sleep!
  • Every Part is Useful: You can eat almost every part of a dandelion! People use the leaves in salads, the roots for tea, and even the flowers to make syrup.
  • Bee Helpers: Dandelions are one of the first flowers bees visit in spring when other plants haven’t bloomed yet. They’re like a buffet for bees!
  • Name Means Lion’s Tooth: The name “dandelion” comes from the French words “dent de lion,” which means “lion’s tooth,” because the leaves look jagged like a lion’s teeth.
