Leaf Matching

Leaf Matching Instructions

  • Find two leaves that you think look exactly alike. Same size. Same shape and color.
  • Put them on something flat, one leaf on top of the other.
  • If you see any part of the bottom leaf sticking out – get another, because these leaves don’t match.
  • If you have two leaves where you don’t see any part sticking out even if you turn them over, then you have found a match.

Congratulations!

… Next Steps

  • OK. So now you have two leaves the same shape and size. But are they really, truly identical?
  • Try this! Hold them up to the light.
How about the veins? They are the little lines flowing out from the stem of the leaf.
  • Compare the ways those veins run in each leaf. Hmmmm…what do you think? Do the vein-lines match, too?
  • Or are leaves perhaps like snowflakes or people, with no two exactly alike?

Think about that one!
“Food for thought” as Bok likes to say.
