How to Keep a Tree Log

Tree Log Instructions

  • First, You need to find yourself a Tree-Buddy!
  • You could find your tree-buddy in the woods or in a park or perhaps you have one right in your garden? Give “him” or “her” a name. Write it in your log plus the date. Then – step away so you can see your whole, new buddy.
  • What kind of shape does he/she have? What does the base of the trunk look like? Can you see the roots? Make a drawing. Take notes, too.
  • Measure the trunk. Put the string around it. Use the measuring strip and some math to figure it out. Write that down.
  • Make a bark rubbing. Hold a paper on the tree-trunk. Use the flat of the pencil and draw back and forth until a pattern appears.

…Next Steps

  • Trace one of the leaves. Notice what the top and the underside feel like. How are the leaves attached? Are the edges smooth? Jagged? You can compare the leaf to the leaf pages we have below that can be printed. Write it all down.
  • Depending on the season, look for flowers, fruits, nuts or seeds. Draw pictures in your log. Describe as much as you can: size, color, shape and how it feels to touch.
  • Write in your log everything you notice each time you visit.
  • Remember that your tree-buddy is ALIVE! And… tree-hugs are great!

Have fun AND have SPARC!
